It only matters what perception you have of yourself. Your beliefs about yourself mold the views you have about yourself. So, it is imperative to have a positive view of yourself. And when things happen in your life - it only matters what you think about those things - no one else's opinion has merit here. And real consciousness of your reality allows you to have awareness of oneself. Overall, your beliefs about yourself and yourself in the world - presents itself just as you belief it will. For instance, if you look in the mirror and you think you need to lose weight and you only weigh 98 lbs., your perception of yourself reflects your beliefs about who you are. When you change your thoughts - you change your reality.
